While there is often heated debate over how old children should be before their first video game and what type of games should be allowed, almost no parent thinks that carte blanche and completely unsupervised gaming is a good idea.  Along those lines PC Mag has posted a very practical article detailing some good general console guidelines as well as console specific steps to activate parental controls.
